Germany to support Bangladesh in democratic transition

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has pledged his government’s support for Bangladesh’s journey towards democracy. The assurance came during a meeting with Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser, Professor Muhammad Yunus, on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

'You can rest assured that we will support you,' Chancellor Scholz told Professor Yunus, who briefed him on the interim government’s reform agenda aimed at fostering democratic governance.
Professor Yunus explained that he is leading a consensus commission to build agreement among political parties on key reform proposals submitted by six specialized commissions. Once a consensus is achieved, the parties are expected to endorse a 'July Charter,' which aims to honor the democratic aspirations of the student-led movements in July and August.
The discussions between the two leaders covered a wide range of topics, including the factors that triggered the July uprising, Bangladesh’s diplomatic relations with neighboring countries, the Rohingya refugee crisis, and the security situation in Myanmar.
Professor Yunus emphasized the importance of strengthening business ties between Bangladesh and Germany. He invited German entrepreneurs to visit Dhaka and explore investment opportunities, stating, 'We can be your factory.' He also encouraged increased German investment to boost Bangladesh’s economic growth.
During the meeting, Professor Yunus reaffirmed Bangladesh’s commitment to revitalizing the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC). He also highlighted the potential of Nepal’s hydroelectric power to benefit multiple South Asian nations, contributing to the region’s transition to renewable energy.
Additionally, Professor Yunus sought Germany’s backing in establishing a United Nations-supervised safe zone in Myanmar’s Rakhine State to ensure the safety and security of the Rohingya community.
