Indian health ministry confirms first 2 cases of HMPV

Two cases of human metapneumovirus (HMPV) have been reported in Bengaluru, India, marking the first recorded instances of the virus in the country.

An eight-month-old infant, currently recovering in the hospital, and a three-month-old who has been discharged, are the identified cases.
The detection of HMPV in India coincides with an ongoing outbreak in China, where hospitals are reportedly overwhelmed with patients experiencing respiratory illnesses. Social media reports suggest the circulation of multiple viruses in China, including influenza A, HMPV, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, and COVID-19.
HMPV, a respiratory virus first identified in 2001, causes flu-like symptoms and can affect individuals of all ages. However, young children under five, older adults, and those with compromised immune systems are particularly vulnerable to severe illness. Symptoms typically include cough, fever, nasal congestion, shortness of breath, and sore throat, appearing three to six days after exposure. In severe cases, hospitalization may be required.
The virus spreads through close contact with infected individuals or contaminated surfaces. It can also be transmitted via coughing, sneezing, or handshakes.
