Dhaka talks with UN for solutions to Rohingya crisis

Bangladesh has reviewed the processes and objectives of the impending International Conference on the Rohingya Crisis, which the UN will organize in 2025 in accordance with a consensus resolution voted by the UN General Assembly this year.

According to a statement on Tuesday, Dr Khalilur Rahman, the chief adviser's high representative on the Rohingya Crisis and Priority Issues, met with Ambassador Philemon Yang, the president of the UN General Assembly (PGA), in New York to address the situation.

Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus raised the proposal for such a meeting during his speech to the UN General Assembly in September 2024, in order to find a long-term and peaceful solution to the Rohingya crisis.
During the discussion on Monday, Rahman emphasized Bangladesh's commitment to fully support the UN in hosting the summit.

He informed Ambassador Yang that the world community is already very interested in the meeting and its conclusion.

He informed the PGA of the most recent political events in the region, as well as the Bangladesh government's desire and attempts to engage and cooperate with all parties involved in the sustainable return of forcibly displaced Rohingyas.

While emphasizing the need of early return of forcibly displaced Rohingyas for safeguarding regional peace and security, the talks also underscored the growing need for humanitarian assistance to Rakhine State in light of recent developments.
PGA Ambassador Yang praised Bangladesh's proactive involvement in the UN on crucial issues.

As the convenor of the international meeting, he pledged his full support for maximum participation and a realistic conclusion of the conference aimed at a peaceful resolution to the situation.
