Pakistan confirms Taliban attack on border posts
The Pakistani army reported that Taliban have launched 'unprovoked heavy weapons fire' on its outposts near the border.
In a statement shared on social media, Pakistan’s armed forces reported that their troops responded with counterfire, resulting in the deaths of over 15 militants and substantial losses for Taliban fighters. The military claimed the confrontation began due to an attempted infiltration allegedly backed by Afghan Taliban elements.
The Taliban, however, provided a contrasting narrative. They stated that their attack was a retaliatory measure following recent Pakistani airstrikes in Afghanistan’s Paktika province. According to Taliban accounts, the strikes targeted a refugee camp in the Barmal district, killing 46 people, including women and children.
Taliban representatives claimed to have targeted 'hostile elements' across the border in Pakistan but refrained from explicitly identifying Pakistani security forces as their focus.
This incident has further escalated tensions between Islamabad and the Taliban government, deepening the strain in their already fragile relationship. Pakistan has repeatedly accused the Taliban of providing sanctuary to Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) militants, responsible for numerous deadly attacks within Pakistan.
The Taliban have denied these accusations, countering that Pakistan’s cross-border airstrikes violate Afghanistan’s sovereignty.
The resurgence of hostilities along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border reflects the growing instability in the region. Cross-border violence has intensified in recent months, with both nations accusing each other of instigating provocations and breaching territorial boundaries.
