China-India resume high-level talks to ease dispute over Himalayan border

China and India agreed on Wednesday to work on easing their long-running border dispute, as the two Asian giants resumed a formal high-level dialogue for the first time in five years.

On Wednesday, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with India’s National Security Adviser Ajit Doval in Beijing. The talks, held under the framework of special representatives for border issues, resumed after a hiatus since late 2019.
This meeting builds upon an agreement reached in October, where both countries consented to military disengagement and patrolling measures along disputed areas of their shared border. Tensions between the nuclear-armed neighbors have persisted since a deadly 2020 clash in the Himalayan region.
According to a statement from China’s Foreign Ministry, both representatives reiterated their commitment to pursuing a "fair, reasonable, and mutually acceptable" resolution to the border issue. They emphasized the importance of handling the dispute effectively to prevent it from straining broader bilateral relations.
The statement highlighted their shared resolve to implement the disengagement agreement, maintain peace in the border areas, and support the stable development of China-India relations.
India’s Foreign Ministry also issued a statement, affirming that both sides underscored the necessity of fostering peaceful conditions along the border to facilitate the normal progression of bilateral ties.
This dialogue signals a renewed effort by both countries to ease tensions and strengthen cooperation despite the challenges posed by their contested border.
