Indian FS Misri to visit Dhaka tomorrow amid frosty India-Bangladesh ties
India's Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri will visit Bangladesh on December 9 amid tension in India-Bangladesh relations. Indian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal gave this information to the media.
During his visit, Misri is expected to engage in extensive discussions with his Bangladeshi counterpart, Md. Jashim Uddin, and meet Mohammad Touhid Hossain, the acting foreign minister of Bangladesh.
Sources indicate that Mr. Misri may also meet Bangladesh's interim leader and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Muhammad Yunus. The visit, which will last nearly 12 hours, is anticipated to cover key diplomatic issues between the two nations.
Bangladesh is likely to raise concerns regarding India's continued sheltering of Sheikh Hasina. Last month, Muhammad Yunus expressed his government’s intention to formally seek Hasina’s extradition from India following her departure from Bangladesh during widespread anti-government protests in August.
The traditionally close ties between the two countries have been under significant strain since Hasina fled Bangladesh. The protests and subsequent political developments have created a challenging backdrop for bilateral relations.
On December 6, 2024, India officially announced Mr. Misri's visit to Dhaka. Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal emphasized that the visit is part of "structured interactions" with Bangladesh under the consultation framework. "The foreign secretary is scheduled to visit Bangladesh for Foreign Office Consultations on December 9," Jaiswal stated briefly.
This visit is seen as a crucial step towards addressing mutual concerns and restoring stability in India-Bangladesh relations.
