Bangladesh secures position on UN International Civil Service Commission
Muhammad Abdul Muhith, Bangladesh’s permanent representative to the United Nations, has been elected as a member of the organisation’s International Civil Service Commission or ICSC.
In a competitive election among three Asia-Pacific nations for two open seats, Bangladesh and China emerged victorious, with South Korea’s candidate missing out on the spot. The election was held on Friday at the UN headquarters in New York. Bangladesh’s term on the ICSC will span from 2025 to 2028.
The ICSC is an independent expert body established by the UN General Assembly, consisting of 15 members. It plays a crucial role in making decisions and recommendations on UN human resources, including compensation and staff entitlements.
Following his election, Ambassador Muhith expressed gratitude and noted that Bangladesh's contribution to the UN has been acknowledged, reflecting the trust UN member states place in Bangladesh. He emphasized the significance of Bangladesh’s selection under the leadership of Chief Advisor Prof. Muhammad Yunus.
Ambassador Muhith, who has served as Bangladesh's permanent representative to the UN since June 2022, will be retiring in December. He will be succeeded by Salahuddin Noman Chowdhury, Bangladesh’s current ambassador to Nepal.
