US elections: 4 Bangladeshi origin candidates see victory
Four Bangladeshi-Americans have joined president-elect Donald Trump in securing notable wins in the US elections.
The winners include Sheikh Rahman, Aboul B. Khan, Nabilah Islam, and Md. Masudur Rahman, each elected to state-level positions. However, no Bangladeshi-American has yet been elected to federal roles in the Senate or Congress.
Aboul Khan, a Republican, secured his seventh term as a state representative in New Hampshire, while Democrat Sheikh Rahman won a fourth term as a Georgia State Senator. Democrat Nabilah Islam was re-elected as a state senator in Georgia, marking her second term, and Democrat Masudur Rahman won his second term as a state senator in Connecticut's District 4.
Aboul Khan, originally from Pirojpur, received 67 percent of the votes in Rockingham, New Hampshire. Sheikh Rahman, with family roots in Kishoreganj, garnered 67.6 percent of votes in Georgia’s 5th Senate District. Nabilah Islam, whose family hails from Noakhali, won with 55 percent in Georgia’s 7th Senate District, while Masudur Rahman, from Chandpur, achieved 64.8 percent in Connecticut.
The Bangladeshi-American community celebrated these victories and noted an increase in voter turnout, reflecting their growing political engagement and representation.
