Canada alleges Indian minister Amit Shah behind plot to target Sikh separatists

The Canadian government alleged on Tuesday that Indian Minister of Home Affairs Amit Shah, a close ally of Hindu nationalist Premier Narendra Modi, was behind the plots to target Sikh separatists on Canadian soil.

India has denied these allegations, dismissing them as unfounded. The Washington Post initially reported on the claims, stating that Canadian officials had directly implicated Shah in the operation.
David Morrison, Canada’s Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister, confirmed in a parliamentary panel that he had corroborated Shah's involvement to the newspaper, though he refrained from providing further details or concrete evidence.
India has historically labeled Sikh separatist groups as threats to national security. These groups advocate for the creation of an independent Sikh state called Khalistan, which they envision as separate from India.
In recent months, tensions between Canada and India have intensified. Canada expelled several Indian diplomats in connection with the 2023 killing of Sikh separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar, an event that has deepened diplomatic strain. In response, India ordered the expulsion of Canadian diplomats.
Similar incidents involving alleged targeting of Sikh separatists abroad have also surfaced. US authorities recently charged former Indian intelligence official Vikash Yadav for allegedly orchestrating a failed assassination attempt against Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, a US-Canadian citizen and outspoken critic of the Indian government.
