Bangladesh to become next BIMSTEC chairman
Bangladesh will take over the chair of the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) a global organisation of seven South Asian and Southeast Asian nations.
This update was shared by BIMSTEC Secretary General Ambassador Indra Mani Pandey following his recent meeting with Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus at the State Guest House Jamuna in Dhaka.
Ambassador Pandey expressed optimism that Yunus's leadership would energize the group’s activities, fostering increased collaboration across member states.
Bangladesh will take on the chairman role following the group’s upcoming summit. Initially founded in 1997, BIMSTEC’s leadership has rotated among member states, with Thailand holding the position since March 2022. Bangladesh has previously led BIMSTEC from 1997 to 1999 and again from 2005 to 2006.
The BIMSTEC secretariat has been based in Dhaka since its establishment in 2014. The organization’s other members include India, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Nepal, and Bhutan.
Originally, the top-level summit was scheduled to take place in Thailand in September but was postponed. The new date for the summit has not yet been announced.
