OHCHR chief Volker Turk to visit Bangladesh this month
UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk is scheduled to arrive in Dhaka on a three-day official visit to Bangladesh in the last week of October.
During his visit, Türk is expected to meet with Chief Adviser Prof. Muhammad Yunus, along with various other key figures, to engage in comprehensive discussions on human rights issues. These talks will likely include discussions about the potential establishment of a UN human rights office in Dhaka, according to an official source.
Previously, the UN human rights chief received a formal invitation from the chief adviser to lead an impartial and independent investigation into human rights violations that occurred between July 1 and August 15. In response, the UN deployed a fact-finding mission to Bangladesh to document these violations, assess their root causes, and offer recommendations for justice, accountability, and long-term reforms.
Bangladesh has recently seen an uptick in visits from UN representatives due to two major developments: the new interim government and the commemoration of 50 years of Bangladesh’s membership in the United Nations. The country officially joined the UN on September 17, 1974.
