Bangladesh court orders arrest warrant for Ex-prime minister Sheikh Hasina

A Bangladeshi court on Thursday ordered an arrest warrant for exiled ex-Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

On Thursday, Mohammad Tajul Islam, the chief prosecutor of Bangladesh's International Crimes Tribunal (ICT), announced the court's decision, stating, 'The court has ordered the arrest of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and that she be presented in court on November 18.'
The prosecutor detailed various accusations against Sheikh Hasina, including allegations of murder, massacres, extrajudicial killings, and the Pilkhana killings during her time in power. Based on these charges, the ICT issued the arrest warrant.
In two separate hearings, the tribunal also instructed law enforcement agencies to apprehend Hasina and 45 other individuals and to bring them before the court by November 18.
The petition argued that Sheikh Hasina's arrest is essential for investigating charges of genocide and crimes against humanity. The complaint referenced incidents that occurred between July 15 and August 5, during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement protests, which took place across Bangladesh.
The nature of the crime outlined in the petition includes accusations that, under the orders of senior officials (accused number one through nine), weapons were fired at unarmed student protesters, leading to their deaths, with the intention of total or partial extermination. These actions were classified as genocide and crimes against humanity.
Previous reports indicated that the prosecution was planning to seek arrest warrants for 50 individuals, including Sheikh Hasina, in connection with the violence during the July-August period.
