Canada expels top India diplomats, links them to murder of Sikh leader
Canada expelled 6 Indian diplomats including the high commissioner on Monday, linking them to the murder of Sikh leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar and alleging a broader effort to target Indian dissidents in Canada.
In response, India ordered the expulsion of six senior Canadian diplomats, including the acting high commissioner, and announced the withdrawal of its own envoy from Canada, despite Canada’s prior expulsion notice.
This escalating diplomatic conflict signals a significant decline in relations between the two Commonwealth nations. Tensions have been brewing since last year when Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau alleged that Indian agents were involved in the assassination of Sikh leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar on Canadian soil.
At a press conference, Trudeau stated that his government has 'clear and compelling evidence' showing that Indian government agents have been involved in activities that threaten public safety. These actions include covert surveillance, coercion, and intimidation of South Asian Canadians, as well as involvement in several violent incidents, including murder.
'This is unacceptable,' Trudeau said, criticizing India for engaging in illegal activities within Canada.
India has consistently rejected Trudeau's claims, and on Monday, it dismissed Canada’s latest move, accusing the Canadian prime minister of advancing a 'political agenda.'
