India demands changes in Indus waters treaty, sends notice to Pakistan
India has sent a notice to Pakistan, demanding a modification of the Indus Waters Treaty. Top sources with the government have said India, in its notice, said in today’s scenario, it is not feasible to maintain the same treaty and thus it needs modification.
The notice highlights that the treaty has been one-sided since its inception, and several provisions need to be reassessed. India pointed out the shifting patterns in water usage and demographics, stating that the agreement should reflect India’s push for clean energy initiatives.
Additionally, India raised concerns over ongoing terrorist activities originating from Pakistan and accused Pakistan of exploiting India's goodwill under the current treaty. The notice emphasized the need for a comprehensive review to address these issues.
The Indus Waters Treaty, originally signed on September 19, 1960, was designed to ensure the optimal and equitable use of the waters from the Indus River system between India and Pakistan.
