Bangladesh's interim govt gives Army magistracy powers for 2 months

Bangladesh's interim government has granted magisterial powers to the Army for two months to improve law and order in the country and prevent 'subversive acts'.

The Ministry of Public Administration issued a notification on the government’s decision on Tuesday, saying it will be applicable with immediate effect.
The decision, which will remain in effect for 60 days, allows Army officers to arrest individuals and disperse illegal gatherings. In cases of self-defense or urgent need, officers are also authorized to open fire, according to an adviser to the interim government.
'We are seeing acts of sabotage and instability in various areas, particularly in industrial zones across the country. Given the circumstances, the Army has been granted magisterial authority,' explained Law Adviser Asif Nazrul on Tuesday.
