Pakistan aims to become a regional hub for maritime transport: Ishaq Dar
Pakistan's Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar has underscored the critical importance of international cooperation for ensuring maritime stability.
Dar stressed that global collaboration is essential for advancing sustainability in the maritime sector. He also outlined the government's plans to modernize the fishing industry, bringing it in line with modern standards and announced that Pakistan's shipbreaking industry would be upgraded with cutting-edge technology to boost efficiency and environmental responsibility.
Dar further expressed Pakistan's goal of becoming a key regional hub for maritime transport, emphasizing that ongoing improvements in the port sector would help realize this vision. He noted that the government had already removed sales taxes on fisheries processing plants and fishery seeds to promote growth in the industry.
He described the Arabian Sea as Pakistan's 'fifth neighbor' and a crucial element of the country’s economic and strategic framework. Pakistan’s strategic location offers significant potential for trade and economic development, with special economic zones creating opportunities for coastal tourism, aquaculture, biotechnology, energy, and health sectors.
Ishaq Dar also highlighted efforts to transform Pakistan’s ports into centers of regional and international trade. He mentioned the establishment of an efficient, green transshipment system and a maritime single window to further enhance port operations.
