Pakistan ex ISI chief Faiz taken into army custody ahead of court martial

The Pakistan army announced that it has arrested former Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) chief Lt Gen (retd.) Faiz Hameed and initiated court martial proceedings against him in connection with a housing scheme scandal.

According to a statement by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the media wing of the army, a thorough court of inquiry was conducted by the Pakistan Army in compliance with the Supreme Court of Pakistan's orders. The inquiry aimed to verify the complaints made against Lt Gen Hameed in the Top City case.
As a result of the inquiry, the Pakistan Army has begun appropriate disciplinary measures against Lt Gen Hameed under the Pakistan Army Act. The ISPR statement also mentioned that various instances of violations of the Pakistan Army Act by Hameed post-retirement have been identified, leading to the initiation of a Field General Court Martial. Consequently, Lt Gen Hameed has been taken into military custody.
During his tenure as the head of the ISI from 2019 to 2021, Lt Gen (retd.) Hameed was regarded as a highly influential figure. His appointment followed the early removal of then-ISI chief and current Army chief Lt Gen Asim Munir, a decision reportedly influenced by then-premier Imran Khan's dissatisfaction with Asim  Munir.
