Heavy rains in northern India leave at least 11 dead, hundreds missing
At least 11 people have died following heavy rains in northern India on Thursday, with over 250 individuals reported missing due to downpours in the Himalayas, including pilgrims stranded on a well-known pilgrimage route.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported 183 mm (seven inches) of rain in the past 24 hours in Dharamshala, a popular tourist destination in Himachal Pradesh.
Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu stated on X (formerly Twitter) that over 50 people are missing in the state capital, Shimla, and its surrounding areas, adding that rescue operations are currently underway.
State Revenue Minister Jagat Singh Negi informed the media that two people died after a barrage in a power project was breached, disrupting connectivity in the region.
The Indian Express reported that four people were killed following a cloudburst in Uttarakhand, and 200 pilgrims were stranded after rains washed away part of their walking path.
The heavy rains, combined with continuous construction, have often resulted in deadly flash floods and landslides in the mountainous regions of India, Pakistan, and Nepal in recent years, a phenomenon attributed to climate change.
