Rohingya repatriation is the only solution: Dhaka-Beijing agree
China has committed to continuing its support 'to the best of its abilities,' including providing a platform for dialogue, to facilitate the swift repatriation of displaced people back to Myanmar.
According to a joint statement released after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's official visit to Beijing from July 8-10, both nations concurred that the prompt repatriation of displaced individuals from Myanmar's Rakhine State, currently sheltered in Bangladesh, is the sole resolution to the issue.
Both countries urged all parties in Myanmar to resolve their differences through dialogue and consultation, emphasizing the need for an immediate cessation of hostilities in Rakhine State.
Bangladesh expressed gratitude to China and requested that China continue its constructive role in facilitating peaceful dialogue to resolve the situation concerning the displaced people from Rakhine State.
China praised Bangladesh's efforts in providing humanitarian assistance to the displaced people over the years and expressed its support for Bangladesh and Myanmar to find a mutually acceptable solution through amicable consultations, following existing repatriation agreements between the two countries.
Bangladesh currently hosts over 1.3 million Rohingyas in Cox's Bazar and Bhasan Char. Since the influx began in 2017, not a single Rohingya has been repatriated.
