Stampede at hindu religious event in India's hathras claims at least 121 lives
The death toll from a stampede at a Hindu religious congregation in northern India has risen to 121, where a police report said the number of people present was more than triple the permitted capacity.
A police report revealed that the number of attendees far exceeded the permitted capacity. While authorities had sanctioned the gathering for 80,000 people, the event saw approximately 250,000 attendees.
The tragic event, which took place on Tuesday, left 28 individuals injured in addition to the fatalities. Among the deceased were 108 women and seven children, according to Manoj Kumar Singh, the chief secretary of Uttar Pradesh.
The chaos erupted as the congregation's preacher, Surajpal, also known as 'Bhole Baba', attempted to leave in his car. Thousands of devotees surged towards the vehicle, causing many to be crushed. Some attendees were also trampled in an adjacent field of slush and mud.
Local media reported that the event was organized by a group of devotees, though specific individuals were not identified.
