Eleven dead in New Delhi after heavy rain, flight operations disrupted
The death toll from this week's sudden heavy rain in New Delhi has risen to 11, including four individuals who drowned in submerged underpasses, according to the Times of India. The heavy rainfall also caused significant disruptions to flight operations in the Indian capital.
Earlier this month, New Delhi experienced one of its worst heatwaves in history. However, on June 28, the city faced its heaviest downpour in decades, with a single day's rainfall surpassing the average for the entire month.
The torrential rain led to a fatal roof collapse at one of the three terminals of Delhi's main airport, causing flight disruptions. It also resulted in flooded underpasses, massive traffic jams, and power and water outages in various parts of the city.
In the last 24 hours, nearly 60 flights were canceled from New Delhi's main airport, according to data from flight tracking platform FlightAware.
Operations were largely back to normal on Sunday, with most flights from the affected terminal being diverted to the other two terminals. An airport official mentioned that while the situation had improved, there could still be possible flight cancellations throughout the day.
