Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina may visit China between 8-11 July

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is expected to visit China from July 8-11, announced Foreign Minister Hasan Mahmud today (June 24).

Mahmud shared the tentative dates of the Prime Minister’s visit following a meeting with Liu Jianshao, the minister of the international department of the Communist Party of China, held at the Intercontinental Hotel in Dhaka.
The Foreign Minister highlighted that trade and security issues would be prioritized during Hasina’s visit to China. Furthermore, discussions may include Bangladesh's potential inclusion in BRICS, along with strategies to enhance trade and address the trade deficit.
Regarding today's meeting with Liu Jianshao, Mahmud stated, 'China is our largest development partner and a major trade partner. We discussed the trade deficit, noting that Bangladesh imports approximately 13 billion dollar from China while exporting just under $1 billion.'
Mahmud also mentioned that Bangladesh has requested China’s assistance in pressuring Myanmar for the repatriation of Rohingya refugees.
He confirmed that there was no discussion about the Teesta mega plan during the meeting.
Liu Jianshao remarked on the strengthened ties between the Awami League (AL) and the Communist Party of China. He emphasized the Communist Party’s commitment to further enhancing the bilateral relationship and expressed interest in supporting Bangladesh’s Vision 2041 and the development of a Smart Bangladesh.
