Lt General Waker-Uz-Zaman appointed Bangladesh Army Chief
Lieutenant General Waker-Uz-Zaman, OSP, SGP, psc, currently serving as the Chief of General Staff (CGS), has been promoted to the rank of general and appointed as the Chief of Army Staff.
According to a press release from ISPR, his tenure as the Army chief will begin on June 23 and will last for three years.
An alumnus of the Bangladesh Military Academy, Lt Gen Waker-Uz-Zaman was commissioned into the Infantry Corps on December 20, 1985.
With a distinguished career spanning over three and a half decades, Lieutenant General Waker has garnered extensive experience in various key command, staff, and instructional roles.
Throughout his notable military career, he has commanded an Infantry Battalion, the only Independent Infantry Brigade of the Bangladesh Army, and an Infantry Division.
His significant staff appointments include roles as a staff officer at an Infantry Brigade, the School of Infantry and Tactics, and Army Headquarters.
He has also served as an instructor at the School of Infantry and Tactics, the Non-commissioned Officers' Academy, and the Bangladesh Institute of Peace Support Operations Training.
Lieutenant General Waker held the position of military secretary at Army Headquarters before becoming the CGS of the Bangladesh Army. He also served as the principal staff officer to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at the Armed Forces Division under the Prime Minister's Office.
In his capacity as the head of the Armed Forces Division, he was directly involved with the UN Peacekeeping Affairs of the Bangladesh Armed Forces. He was recognized as a Gender Champion and Gender Advocate of Bangladesh for UN Peacekeeping Affairs.
As principal staff officer, he chaired the Bangladesh National Authority for Chemical Weapons Convention.
Lt Gen Waker has completed two tours of duty with the United Nations, serving as an observer and staff in UNAVEM (Angola) and UNMIL (Liberia).
As the CGS of the Bangladesh Army, his responsibilities include overseeing military operations, military intelligence, UN peacekeeping affairs, the budget, and various other military matters.
Lieutenant General Waker had the unique honor of commanding the National Victory Day Parade for three consecutive years.
For his significant contributions to the modernization of the army, he was awarded the prestigious Army Medal of Glory (SGP) and the Extraordinary Service Medal (OSP).
