Sheikh Hasina seeks UK's help to repatriate Rohingyas to Myanmar
Bangladesh's Premier Sheikh Hasina called upon the United Kingdom (UK) to help repatriate the forcibly displaced Rohingyas to their motherland Myanmar.
During a courtesy meeting with UK Minister of State for the Indo-Pacific, Anne-Marie Trevelyan, at her official residence in Ganabhaban, Sheikh Hasina emphasized the growing burden the Rohingya population has placed on Bangladesh, highlighting the escalating numbers of refugees arriving daily.
In response to Trevelyan's inquiries about education, training, and employment opportunities for Rohingya refugees in Cox's Bazar camps, Sheikh Hasina underscored the challenges posed by overcrowded conditions, making it unfeasible to provide adequate facilities within the camps. However, she noted that the Bangladeshi government has established housing with comprehensive amenities on Bhasanchar Island to accommodate Rohingya refugees, including healthcare services and employment prospects.
Furthermore, Sheikh Hasina urged Britain to expand its investments in Bangladesh, emphasizing the potential for larger-scale economic collaboration between the two nations.
The discussion also touched upon the pressing issue of climate change, with Prime Minister Hasina commending the UK's commitment to fulfilling its pledges and providing compensation through the Loss and Damage fund to countries affected by the adverse effects of climate change, in accordance with the Paris Accord. She lamented the lack of significant contributions from other developed nations towards this cause.
Anne-Marie Trevelyan's visit to Dhaka, spanning two days, aims to bolster the economic, security, and migration partnership between Bangladesh and the UK, reflecting the shared commitment to addressing critical global challenges and fostering bilateral cooperation.
