Three Indian nationals arrested and charged over Sikh activist's killing in Canada
Three Indian nationals have been arrested and charged over the killing of Sikh leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada, which sparked a major diplomatic row between the two countries.
Hardeep Singh Nijjar, aged 45, fell victim to a fatal shooting last June, perpetrated by masked assailants within a bustling parking lot in a Vancouver suburb. Nijjar was prominently known as a proponent for Sikh separatism, advocating for the establishment of Khalistan—an independent Sikh state in the Punjab region of India.
The situation escalated into a diplomatic spat when Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau insinuated potential involvement by the Indian government—a claim vehemently refuted by officials in Delhi.
In a recent announcement, Superintendent Mandeep Mooker disclosed the identities of the three suspects as Karan Brar, 22, Kamal Preet Singh, 22, and 28-year-old Karan Preet Singh, all residents of Edmonton, Alberta, where they were arrested. They face charges of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder, as per court documents.
These individuals have resided in Canada for a span ranging from three to five years, according to law enforcement authorities. Additionally, ongoing investigations are delving into potential links to the Indian government.
