180 Myanmar troops to return home, 170 Bangladeshis to be brought back
Bangladeshi Foreign Minister Hasan Mahmud has announced plans to repatriate 170 Bangladeshi nationals stranded in Myanmar while facilitating the return of 180 Myanmar security forces personnel who had sought refuge in Bangladesh amidst the ongoing conflict.
Minister Mahmud disclosed that a total of 177 members of Myanmar's Border Guard Police (BGP), later joined by three army personnel, sought sanctuary in Bangladesh. Following discussions with the Myanmar government, an agreement was reached for their return.
"They proposed a sea route, and we initially aimed to repatriate them this week. However, due to unfavorable sea conditions, their return will be rescheduled for the following week or when the seas are calm," stated the Foreign Minister.
He further added, "The Myanmar authorities have also responded positively to our proposal to bring back the 170 stranded Bangladeshis."
The conflict between Myanmar's military and rebel groups has long affected border regions, resulting in sporadic violence and casualties in Bangladesh due to mortar shells and bullets crossing the border.
Previously, on February 16, the Bangladeshi government facilitated the return of 330 individuals, including Myanmar border guards and armed forces personnel who had fled the conflict in Myanmar's Rakhine state.
