Pakistan PM Shehbaz bans red carpets at official events

Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has taken a decisive step by ordering authorities to prohibit the use of red carpets at official events, signaling a departure from the traditional practice.

Expressing his dissatisfaction with the customary laying of red carpets during the visits of federal ministers and senior officials, Prime Minister Sharif has articulated his stance on the matter.
The Cabinet Division has confirmed that the ban on red carpets aligns with the Prime Minister's directives, underscoring the importance of adhering to his instructions.
As per the notification, red carpets will now be reserved exclusively for diplomatic receptions, marking a shift in protocol.
In a recent development, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif along with members of the federal cabinet has collectively opted to waive their salaries and perks as part of the government's austerity campaign.
Last month Prime Minister Sharif emphasized the critical necessity of implementing austerity measures across the government.
Prior to this decision, President of Pakistan, Asif Ali Zardari, had declined to accept his salary and perks, citing the nation's economic challenges.
According to a report by Dawn newspaper, Human Rights Watch (HRW) has highlighted Pakistan's severe economic crisis in 2023, characterized by surging poverty, inflation, and unemployment. These challenges have posed significant threats to millions of people's rights to health, food, and an adequate standard of living.
