US warns Pakistan on ties over election irregularities

The United States issued a stern warning to Pakistan on Wednesday, emphasizing that bilateral relations would be at risk if Pakistan fails to address irregularities in last month's election and take necessary steps such as rerunning votes if warranted.

Donald Lu, the top US diplomat for South Asia, conveyed to lawmakers that the US harbors 'serious concerns' regarding the conduct of the February 8 election and the continued disruptions in media and social media platforms, including the extended shutdown of X.
During a House Foreign Affairs subcommittee hearing marked by occasional uproar, Donald Lu stressed the importance of the Election Commission of Pakistan addressing any substantiated irregularities by considering rerunning elections in affected areas.
'We have maintained a partnership with this country for 76 years. However, it will pose a significant challenge to our relationship if Pakistan fails to uphold a democratic process in line with its own constitution,' Donald Lu remarked.
He further clarified that the United States isn't contemplating any substantial new military sales to Pakistan. Pakistan, historically a Cold War ally, has seen its military and intelligence entities exert considerable influence in politics. Past connections with Afghanistan's Taliban have also strained relations with Washington.
