India, Bangladesh DG-level border talks begin in Dhaka

The 54th director general level border conference between Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and Border Security Forces (BSF) of India kicked off on Tuesday, taking place over five days at the BGB Headquarters in Pilkhana, Dhaka.

The conference is being attended by a 16-member delegation from Bangladesh, headed by BGB Director General Major General Mohammad Ashrafuzzaman Siddiqui, and a nine-member Indian delegation led by Border Security Force (BSF) Director General Nitin Agrawal.
In addition to senior BGB officials, the Bangladeshi delegation includes representatives from the Prime Minister's Office, Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Joint River Commission (JRC). Meanwhile, the Indian delegation comprises senior officials from the BSF, Indian Ministries of Home Affairs and External Affairs, as well as representatives from the Indian High Commission in Dhaka.
The key agenda items for discussion during the conference encompass topics such as border killings, illegal trespassing, curbing the smuggling of drugs, arms, and ammunition, as well as addressing other illicit activities along the border. The conference also aims to strategize on implementing various developmental initiatives within a 150-yard radius of international borders, preserving riverbanks along the borders, and adopting a coordinated border management plan (CBMP).
The conclusion of the conference is scheduled for March 9, 2024, at 9:00 am, marked by the signing of Joint Records of Discussions (JRD). Following the conclusion, the Indian delegation is expected to depart from Dhaka on the same day.
