BGB, Coast Guard on high alert as gunfire sounds rattle Bangladesh-Myanmar border
Since Saturday night, members of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and Bangladesh Coast Guard have been on high alert as the sounds of gunfire and mortar shells emanate from Myanmar, causing concern along the Teknaf border.
Residents in the border areas express living in fear, prompting both the BGB and Coast Guard to enhance their patrols along the Hnila and Whykong unions, as well as the Shapuree Dwip areas.
In response to the incidents, law enforcement agencies have increased efforts to prevent Myanmar nationals from entering Bangladesh. Approximately 400 individuals have been turned back so far.
Lieutenant Tahsin Rahman, the media officer of Coast Guard Chittagong East Zone, stated, 'We have reinforced patrolling along the Naf River due to the potential threat of intrusion from the other side. No one is permitted to enter Bangladesh again.'
On Saturday, reports indicated heavy shelling from Myanmar across the Naf River at the Teknaf border in Cox's Bazar, with the area enveloped in black smoke.
The unsettling sounds of mortar shells have persisted throughout the day, instilling fear among the approximately 10,000 people residing in proximity to the border.
