India's supreme court orders elections in Kashmir by Sept 2024

India's Supreme Court recently upheld the legality of the decision to nullify Article 370 of the Constitution, a provision that had granted special status to Jammu and Kashmir. This move, made over four years ago by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government, received a significant endorsement from the highest court in the country.

In its ruling, a five-member Constitution bench led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud mandated that the Election Commission take necessary measures to conduct elections for the legislative assembly of Jammu and Kashmir no later than September 3, 2024.
Chief Justice Chandrachud, while delivering the verdict, affirmed, "We affirm the exercise of presidential authority to issue a constitutional order annulling Article 370 of the Constitution as legitimate."
Moreover, the bench directed the prompt reinstatement of statehood for Jammu and Kashmir. The region has functioned as a federally-administered territory since the nullification of Article 370 in August 2019, and the court emphasized the urgency of restoring its statehood at the earliest possible time.
