Pakistani court rejects Imran's plea to withdraw appeal in Toshakhana case
A Pakistani court on Wednesday rejected the ex- Premier Imran Khan’s request to withdraw his appeal against his disqualification by the country’s Election Commission previous year.
Imran Khan faced disqualification by the Election Commission of Pakistan last year in October due to allegations of failing to disclose gifts received during his tenure as the country's premier.
Following the Election Commission's decision, Khan sought recourse by filing an appeal with the Islamabad High Court (IHC) against his disqualification.
Presently incarcerated in Adiala Jail since his arrest in August, the former cricket star has encountered legal proceedings during his imprisonment.
Additionally, Khan and former Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi faced indictment in a state secrets case known as the “cipher case” last month, both asserting their innocence.
However, the Islamabad High Court ruled the indictment and the subsequent legal proceedings in jail as 'illegal.'
The 'cipher case' revolves around diplomatic communications between Washington and Islamabad, with Khan claiming it as part of a conspiracy by the United States to destabilize his government last year.
Imran Khan, who served as Pakistan's prime minister from 2018 to 2022, faced a vote of confidence in parliament in April 2022, leading to his defeat one year short of completing his term.
