India-Bangladesh ties stand as model: Jaishankar

Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar lauded the noteworthy advancements and positive examples set by the bilateral relations between India and Bangladesh over the past decade.

Speaking in London on Wednesday, Jaishankar emphasized that the relationship between Dhaka and Delhi now serves as an exemplar for others to follow.
During a Wilton Park talk—an executive agency of the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office facilitating global strategic discussions—Jaishankar responded to a query raised by Bangladesh's High Commissioner in the UK, Saida Muna Tasneem. Tasneem sought insights regarding Dhaka's significance in Indian foreign policy, particularly concerning security, regional connectivity, shared prosperity, and the Indo-Pacific.
Jaishankar highlighted efforts aimed at restructuring the regional landscape, emphasizing that these actions were not solely unilateral decisions made by India.
He underscored significant milestones achieved in India-Bangladesh relations, notably the resolution of the land boundary issue—a monumental achievement in their bilateral ties. Jaishankar pointed out that despite differences concerning the maritime boundary, both nations opted for arbitration. They mutually agreed to abide by the arbitral award, even though a substantial portion favored Bangladesh, demonstrating a commitment to peaceful resolution—a positive example for the region and beyond.
Over the past decade, Jaishankar mentioned several collaborative projects, including railway connections, establishment of a power plant, and India's utilization of Bangladesh's ports for the benefit of India's northeast region. These developments have resulted in increased traffic through the ports, mutually benefiting both nations.
Highlighting the energy cooperation between the two countries, Jaishankar remarked, "Today, our relationship with Bangladesh serves as a beacon within the Indian subcontinent—a model partnership."
