Pakistani court grants bail to Nawaz Sharif in corruption cases
A Pakistani court has approved bail for former three-time Premier Nawaz Sharif in two corruption cases. These cases resulted in convictions after his removal from the prime minister's office in 2017.
The Islamabad High Court granted Nawaz Sharif bail until Thursday, and prosecutors did not raise objections, expressing trust that he would appear for the trial, as confirmed by Sharif's lawyer, Azam Nazeer Tarar.
Nawaz Sharif made a return to Pakistan last week after spending four years in self-imposed exile in London, with the intention of participating in next year's elections against his primary rival, former Prime Minister Imran Khan.
Sharif had not set foot in Pakistan since 2019 when he traveled to the United Kingdom for medical treatment while serving a 14-year prison sentence for corruption. In a separate case, his bail had previously been affirmed by a corruption court in Islamabad.
Presently, Imran Khan, Sharif's successor, is imprisoned on corruption charges and serving a three-year sentence. Khan was ousted from office through a vote of no confidence in April 2022. Nevertheless, he remains Pakistan's prominent opposition figure and retains a substantial following through his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party.
Similar to Imran Khan, Sharif is presently ineligible to run for a parliamentary seat.
