US doesn't want to influence outcome of Bangladesh polls: Matthew Miller
US State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller has emphasized that the United States has no intentions of influencing the outcome of the forthcoming election in Bangladesh.
During a routine press briefing in Washington, Miller made it clear that the US does not endorse any specific political party and is committed to ensuring that the people of Bangladesh can exercise their right to choose their leaders without external interference.
In response to questions regarding recent comments made by the US ambassador to Bangladesh concerning media and the US visa policy, Miller clarified that the visa policy is intended to apply to anyone found engaged in activities that could potentially intimidate the electoral process or manipulate votes.
Miller underscored the rationale behind the visa restriction policy, stating, 'The visa restriction policy that we've announced aligns with our objective and supports the desire of the people of Bangladesh to have the freedom to select their leaders.'
He stressed that the United States shares the same aspiration as the people of Bangladesh: to have transparent, equitable elections that transpire peacefully.
Miller highlighted that this desire for free and fair elections has been echoed by various stakeholders within Bangladesh, including the government, political parties, civil society, and the media, all of whom wish for the upcoming national elections to be conducted in a manner that upholds these principles, mirroring the US's own stance.
