Indecisiveness on Rohingya repatriation to Myanmar jeopardizes regional security: Hasina
Bangladesh's premier Sheikh Hasina has raised concerns about the United Nations' indecision regarding the repatriation of Rohingya refugees to Myanmar, emphasizing that it poses a serious threat to the stability of the entire region.
Speaking at the 78th session of the UN General Assembly in New York City, Hasina expressed her frustration with the situation and called for urgent action.
Prime minister Hasina began by acknowledging the six-year anniversary of the mass displacement of the Rohingya people, who fled persecution in Myanmar. Bangladesh has provided shelter to over 1.2 million Rohingya Muslims, driven from their homes by violence in Myanmar's Rakhine state.
Hasina highlighted the growing challenges that Bangladesh has faced as a result of hosting a large Rohingya refugee population. These challenges encompass economic strain, environmental concerns, security issues, and disruptions to the country's socio-political stability.
The prolonged presence of Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh has had severe consequences, including mounting frustration among the displaced population. This frustration, Hasina warned, could potentially contribute to radicalization. Furthermore, if the repatriation issue remains unresolved, it may have far-reaching implications, affecting the security and stability not only of Bangladesh but also of the entire region.
PM Hasina concluded her address by appealing to world leaders at the UN to take decisive action, emphasizing the need to restore hope for the Rohingya people by facilitating their return to their homeland. She stressed that such repatriation efforts are vital for fostering safety and stability in the region.
