Pakistan ex-PM Imran Khan's jail extended for two weeks

Pakistan's former Premier Imran Khan's jail detention related to charges of leaking state secrets was extended for another two weeks, his lawyer said on Wednesday.

The 70-year-old, renowned for his cricket career, has remained embroiled in a political upheaval ever since he lost a vote of confidence in the parliament back in April 2022. His recent conviction in a separate corruption case has also resulted in his disqualification from participating in the upcoming national elections, scheduled to take place in the forthcoming months.
Towards the end of August, a high court temporarily suspended Khan's prison sentence for corruption, mere weeks after his initial imprisonment. However, a prior detention order pertaining to the state secrets case continues to thwart his release.
The most recent extension of the remand order means that Khan will remain behind bars until September 26, as confirmed by his attorney, Naeem Panjutha, in a statement on the X messaging platform.
