Pakistan ex-PM Imran Khan's graft conviction suspended
A Pakistani court has suspended the conviction and three-year prison sentence handed down to former Prime Minister Imran Khan in the state gifts depository case.
Imran Khan, who is 70 years old, had been convicted on August 5 by a trial court for failing to disclose gifts he had received from foreign governments and leaders during his tenure as Premier from 2018 to 2022. In addition to his prison sentence, Khan had also been barred from contesting elections for a period of five years by the country's election commission, following his imprisonment.
The decision by the IHC comes in the wake of Pakistan's Supreme Court's observation that the verdict of the trial court was marred by 'procedural defects.'
On the same Tuesday, Imran Khan's political party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), lodged a plea with the IHC, seeking a ban on authorities from re-arresting Khan.
