Ex-Pakistan PM Khan to face charges of exposing official secrets

Former Prime Minister Imran Khan of Pakistan will be subject to criminal proceedings on accusations of revealing official secrets, as announced by Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah on Wednesday.

The charges in question revolve around diplomatic communications between Washington and Islamabad, which Khan claimed last year were part of a US-driven conspiracy to undermine his government. However, the United States has vehemently denied any involvement in such a conspiracy.
The decision to initiate the criminal proceedings came after Azam Khan, Imran Khan's former principal secretary, provided a court statement indicating that Khan manipulated a US diplomatic encrypted letter in March 2022 to advance his political objectives, according to Sanaullah.
Imran Khan, the 70-year-old former cricket icon, faced a vote of no confidence in April 2022, resulting in his loss of power. Khan has asserted that Washington intervened in response to his visit to Moscow.
During a public gathering shortly after his removal from office, Khan held up a piece of paper, claiming it was a copy of a secret diplomatic letter warning of severe consequences if he continued to align himself closely with Russia. Notably, Khan had traveled to Moscow just before Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
As these charges loom over him, Imran Khan finds himself entangled in legal complexities, adding further uncertainty to his political future. The legal process will now unfold as authorities in Pakistan investigate the alleged exposure of official secrets by the former prime minister.
