Sri Lankan president says IMF accord pushed back after unrest

Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe said on Saturday that an deal with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has been pushed back to September due to the unrest over the past weeks_ the Associated Press reported.

President Wickremesinghe_ in his first speech since he was elected by parliament_ said even though he when premier had aimed to reach an deal by early August_ it has now been pushed back by a month_ the report said.

Ranil Wickremesinghe was appointed after former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa_ under whom the discussions with IMF began in April_ was ousted on Jul 13.

The country's finance ministry on Friday said Sri Lanka had resumed bailout discussions with International Monetary Fund after the new government took office and talks were highly successful.

The country has 12 billion dollar overseas debt with private creditors.
