Nepal to change power projects that will export electricity to Bangladesh

In a bid to facilitate the export of electricity to Bangladesh under a tripartite agreement involving India, Nepal is making preparations to modify its power projects.

Once the issue of electricity tariff is resolved, the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) will present a list of hydropower projects to India for approval, according to officials.
India has consented to permit the transmission of a maximum of 40 megawatts of electricity through its existing transmission line to facilitate Nepal's power export to Bangladesh. As a result, the NEA is now gearing up to propose alternative hydropower projects to India for their approval, as reported by the Kathmandu Post.
Earlier, Bangladesh and Nepal had mutually agreed to explore the possibility of trading up to 50MW of electricity. Initially, the NEA had sought permission from Indian authorities to sell the power generated from the 52.4-megawatt (MW) Likhu-4 project to Bangladesh.
However, India conveyed its decision to allow transmission for up to 40MW only, citing the consideration of the country's existing unused capacity in its transmission infrastructure.
In light of these developments, Nepal is diligently working to identify suitable power projects that align with India's approved transmission capacity, thus paving the way for electricity export to Bangladesh. The tripartite agreement holds significant promise for enhancing regional cooperation in the energy sector and strengthening ties between Nepal, India, and Bangladesh.
