A violent clash between security forces and Maoist insurgents in the dense forests of central India on Sunday resulted in the deaths of at least 31 rebels and two Indian commandos.
Authorities indicated that the death toll could rise as security personnel continue search operations in the area. According to a police statement, automatic weapons and grenade launchers were recovered from the site.
The encounter took place in the forested regions of Bijapur district in Chhattisgarh, a state widely regarded as the epicenter of Maoist insurgency.
Describing the operation as a significant step toward eliminating Naxal influence in the country, Indian Home Minister Amit Shah reiterated the government’s commitment to eradicating the insurgency by 2026.
Over the past year, a security crackdown has led to the deaths of approximately 287 Maoist rebels, with the majority of encounters occurring in Chhattisgarh, according to official government data. Just last month, a roadside bomb attack claimed the lives of at least nine Indian soldiers.
