India-Bangladesh farmers clash along border in West Bengal

Farmers from India and Bangladesh clashed along the international border in West Bengal’s Malda district on Saturday, forcing border guards from both nations to fire stun grenades and tear gas to disperse crowds that swelled to nearly 1,000 people on each side.

The clash began around 11:45 am in Sukhdevpur, located approximately 50 kilometers south of Malda town. What initially started as a minor disagreement quickly escalated, leading to stone-pelting between individuals from both nations.
The incident occurred less than a kilometer from Sabdalpur, an area that had already seen heightened tensions earlier this month. On January 5, hostilities broke out when the Border Security Force (BSF) began constructing a 1.2-kilometer-long border fence within 150 yards of the international boundary, a development that raised concerns locally and diplomatically.
This latest border unrest has also become a point of contention between the two countries on a diplomatic level. On Sunday, Bangladesh summoned India’s high commissioner in Dhaka to convey its “deep concern” regarding the border situation and the violence. In response, India called in Bangladesh’s deputy high commissioner in Delhi the following day to emphasize the importance of adhering to the previously agreed-upon border management protocols between the two nations.
