Arrests after Muslims killed in mosque survey violence in India's Uttar Pradesh

Authorities in India’s Uttar Pradesh state have arrested dozens of people and implemented strict measures, including internet shutdowns and school closures, following violent clashes in Sambhal district over a survey of a Mughal-era mosque.

The violence erupted on Sunday during a court-ordered survey of the Shahi Jama Masjid, resulting in the deaths of three Muslim men — Naeem, Bilal, and Noman — according to local media. The death toll rose to four when a 19-year-old man succumbed to his injuries later.
Police reported the arrest of at least 25 individuals and filed complaints against approximately 2,500 people. Among those named was Zia-ur-Rehman Barq, a local Member of Parliament from the regional Samajwadi Party (SP), said Sambhal police chief Krishan Kumar Bishnoi.
The incident has drawn comparisons to the 1992 Babri Mosque dispute in Ayodhya, also in Uttar Pradesh, where a Hindu mob demolished a 16th-century mosque, claiming it was built on a temple site dedicated to Lord Ram. The mosque’s destruction triggered widespread religious riots, leaving nearly 2,000 people dead, the majority of whom were Muslims.
