India says Canada's allegations against its diplomats 'preposterous'

India said on Monday that a diplomatic communication from Canada suggesting the Indian High Commissioner and other diplomats were ‘persons of interest’ in a probe were 'preposterous imputations' and part of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s political agenda.

In a statement, India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) expressed strong disapproval, stating that the country reserves the right to respond to what it called Canada’s 'concocted allegations.' The statement further criticized Trudeau, pointing to past instances where his actions allegedly strained India-Canada relations.
The MEA highlighted Trudeau's 2018 visit to India, claiming it was an attempt to secure political support but ended in diplomatic embarrassment. It also noted that members of Trudeau's Cabinet have been linked to extremist and separatist agendas hostile to India. The ministry referred to Trudeau's "interference" in India’s internal politics, including his support for farmers' protests in 2020, as another example of his confrontational stance.
India further accused Trudeau's government of relying on political parties that support separatism in India, which has exacerbated tensions between the two nations.
Relations between India and Canada took a sharp downturn after Trudeau alleged Indian involvement in the June killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Canadian citizen labeled a terrorist by India. Nijjar was shot outside a Gurudwara in Surrey, Canada, intensifying diplomatic friction between the two countries.
