India confident of positive, constructive ties with Bangladesh: Jaishankar
Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar expressed optimism about India's continued 'positive and constructive' relationship with neighboring countries Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.
Speaking at an event titled 'India, Asia and the World,' hosted by the Asia Society and the Asia Society Policy Institute in New York, Jaishankar emphasized that India is not seeking to control the political dynamics of its neighbors.
Responding to concerns about India's support for Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, and whether changes in their governments might negatively impact India, Jaishankar acknowledged that each country operates within its own political framework. He noted, 'It’s not our intention to dictate what is best for them. Every country makes its own choices, and we adapt to those choices, finding ways to collaborate.'
Regarding Bangladesh, Jaishankar pointed out that the relationship has evolved over the past decade through various collaborative projects that have benefited both countries, improving economic activity and regional logistics.
His comments followed a meeting with Bangladesh's Foreign Affairs Adviser, Touhid Hossain, on the sidelines of the 79th session of the UN General Assembly.
Jaishankar expressed confidence that the natural interdependence between India and its neighbors would continue to drive cooperation. 'In foreign policy, you read, anticipate, and respond. I am confident that mutual benefits and our ability to get along will prevail, as has been the case historically,' he concluded.
