'Neighbours Dependent On Each Other': FM Jaishankar On Bangladesh Ties

The political churn in Bangladesh is that country's 'internal matter' but India is keen to continue what was a stable relationship, India's External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar told media Tuesday afternoon, underlining the maxim that neighbouring nations are 'dependent on each other'.

In a broad interview, Jaishankar also touched on global issues such as Russia’s war in Ukraine, India’s potential role as a mediator, comments from Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei, and the ongoing conflict in Gaza. He further reflected on the recent wave of international visits during the first 100 days of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's third term.
'Whatever happens in Bangladesh is their internal issue. As their neighbor, India values a stable relationship with Bangladesh. We have strong trade and people-to-people connections, and we want to keep that intact,' Jaishankar said regarding the situation in Bangladesh.
Last week, Nobel laureate dr. Yunus, who heads an interim government in Bangladesh, expressed a similar desire to maintain positive relations with India, while stressing the importance of ensuring that these ties are based on 'fairness and equality.'
