Heavy rains in north India leave over 28 dead
Heavy rainfall across northern and northwestern India has led to the deaths of at least 28 people, as continuous downpours on Sunday caused widespread devastation. The relentless rain triggered landslides, severe flooding, house collapses, and even a dam breach in Haryana, which flooded several villages, worsening the crisis.
Rajasthan has been hit the hardest, with 16 fatalities reported over the past two days, including 14 deaths on Sunday alone. Karauli district experienced an extreme deluge, recording 38 cm of rainfall, resulting in flood-like conditions in many areas. A rescue operation is underway after five individuals were swept away at the Kanota Dam in Jaipur.
In Delhi, a seven-year-old boy tragically drowned in a pond that had formed from rainwater accumulation in a park in the Rohini area. This incident occurred on Friday evening.
In Hoshiarpur, Punjab, nine people, including eight members of a single family, lost their lives when their vehicle was carried away by a surging rivulet. Two family members are still missing.
Cities like Mohali, Ludhiana, Amritsar, Rupnagar, and Ambala also received heavy rainfall. According to the Meteorological Department, Pathankot recorded 82 mm of rainfall, Gurdaspur 68.8 mm, Amritsar 57.6 mm, and Chandigarh experienced 129.7 mm of rainfall in the 24 hours leading up to 8:30 a.m. on Sunday.
