US says India has ability to urge Putin to end war in Ukraine

The United States emphasized that India's long-standing relationship with Russia positions it to influence President Vladimir Putin to halt the war in Ukraine. This statement was made on Tuesday during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's two-day visit to Moscow.

White House spokesperson Karine Jean-Pierre, addressing a question about the visit during a press briefing, highlighted that India is a "strategic partner" with whom the US engages in open and candid discussions, including those concerning India's ties with Russia.
Jean-Pierre stressed the importance of all nations, including India, in supporting efforts to achieve a lasting and just peace in Ukraine. "It is important for all our allies to realize this," she said, emphasizing that the responsibility to end the war lies with Putin.
Earlier in the day, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed his dismay over the meeting between Modi and Putin, referring to it as a significant setback to peace efforts. Zelensky criticized the encounter in a post on X, describing it as a "huge disappointment" and lamenting seeing the leader of the world's largest democracy embrace the "world’s most bloody criminal."
