Militant attack kills 5 Indian Army soldiers in Kashmir region
A militant attack on an Indian Army convoy in the Jammu and Kashmir region has resulted in the deaths of at least 5 soldiers, according to India's Defence Minister on Tuesday. This incident is part of a recent surge of violence that has unsettled the region.
The Kashmir Valley and its surrounding areas have experienced militant violence since the beginning of an insurgency in 1989, which has claimed tens of thousands of lives. Although the violence had decreased in recent years, it has seen a resurgence.
On Monday, gunmen attacked the convoy in Kathua district with a grenade, followed by gunfire. The soldiers returned fire, causing the assailants to flee into a nearby forest, as reported by local media.
'Counter-terrorist operations are ongoing, and our soldiers are committed to restoring peace and order in the region,' Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said in a post on X, expressing condolences to the families of the fallen soldiers.
The Himalayan region of Kashmir is claimed by both India and Pakistan, each controlling part of it. India governs the Hindu-majority Jammu region and the Muslim-majority Kashmir Valley.
In June, militant attacks in the Jammu area resulted in 12 deaths and numerous injuries. Indian Home Minister Amit Shah, during a security review meeting last month, stated that the fight against militancy in the region is entering a decisive phase.
